Organisation
Use a full size pitch, divided into thirds. Play will utilise the middle third principally.
Divide players into two teams - 11 x Blue and 11 x Red.
Blue team play in a 4-3-3; Red team play in a 4-4-2
Blue team to be coached.
Instructions
Blue team commences from GK with CB dropping out of middle third to receive the ball unopposed as before.
Each team must make 6 passes inside the zone. Play should take place within the middle zone as much as possible. However, if necessary, a player eg a CB can drop out of the middle third to receive the ball and retain possession before player the ball back into the middle third. Any passes received outside the middle zone or made from outside the middle zone do not count towards the 6 passes total. After 6 passes, the team in possession can play a pass to the CF - either to feet or to run onto behind the defence - and the CF will have a 1 on 1 with the GK. No opposition can leave the middle third to defend.
Coaching Points
High intensity pressing when out of possession.
Progressions
1. Red team commences from GK with CB dropping out of middle third to receive the ball unopposed as before. Red team are required to still make 6 passes before being able to attack. However, blue team are not subject to such a condition, and once they gain possession, can attack immediately - still unopposed. As soon as blue team score or GK saves, play must recommence immediately, with red team trying to make use of the overload until the Red CF recovers.
2. Allow two attacking players out of the middle third when attacking, together with one opponent to act as a defender and play the attack under pressure.
3. Front 3 blue team players reamin in middle third but must not defend. Remaining 7 blue team players must defend against 10 red players. Once blue team gain possession, they attack immediately utilising the 3 attacking players.
